Joyce Lorraine Watts Kessel
11 June 1923 --- 18 May 1995

Joyce Lorraine Watts was born June 11, 1923 in Rutland, the daughter of Jesse and Perina Peterson Watts. She was raised in Rutland and graduated from Rutland High School in 1941. She then attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls and received her teaching degree. After graduating she returned to Rutland and taught rural school for one year.

She was united in marriage to Wayne Kessel at Humboldt, August 7, 1943. After their marriage they moved to Ocean City, Md. where he was stationed in the Coast Guard. After her husband's military obligation they moved to Eagle Grove and engaged in farming. In 1955 they moved to their present home west of Dows and continued farming.

She was the subscription manager of the Iowa Prep Illustration Magazine in Eagle Grove. She was a member of the New Hope Church in Webster City where she was in various circles and on the Administration Board.

Joyce Lorraine Kessel died Thursday, May 18, 1995, as a result of a car accident six miles west of Dows at the age of 71.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Wayne, Kenny and Russ Watts. She is survived by her husband; two sons, Gary and his wife Judy of Dows; and Randy and his wife, Susan, of Kelley; one daughter, Diane and her husband, Roger Lomker of Rosemount, Minn.; five grandchildren, Michael Kessel, Kristi Weimer, Angela Kessel, Brent and Sunde Nixon; and one newly born great granddaughter, Alexa Ann Weimer;
two brothers, Cecil Watts of LuVerne; and Ronald Watts of Clear Lake; and four sisters, Eunice Blomker of Humboldt; Virginia Hansen of Uba [Yuba?] City, Calif.; Alice Goodell of Humboldt; and Georgia Sorenson of Gilmore City.

Funeral services were held from the Faith United Methodist Church in Humboldt, Monday, May 22, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Russell Dilley officiating. Burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery, Eagle Grove. The Elledge Funeral Home of Dows was in charge of arrangements.
