Milton Wayne Groom
10 August 1898 ---- 1 March 1954

Milton Wayne Groom, son of Joseph and Katherine Groom, was born on a farm near Mapleton, Iowa, August 10, 1898. At the age of 16 he took up the barbering profession under the tutelage of Logan Leigh at Mapleton. On March 13, 1919, he married Emma Christensen of Soldier, Iowa, at Ute, Iowa. Here he bought his first barber shop in which his wife operated a beauty shop. While at Ute, their only child, Katheryn Ann, was born.

Continuing in his chosen profession for some 39 years, Mr. Groom owned or leased barber shops at Sioux City, Clarion, Ames, and Eagle Grove. The family moved to Clarion in 1940 and to Eagle Grove in 1946. In 1948 they bought their present lovely home on W. Broadway.

Mr. Groom was baptized in the Christian church at Ute, Iowa. In 1930 he and his family became members of Bethesda Lutheran church at Ames and then of Eagle Grove Evangelical Lutheran church after they had moved here.

He suffered failing health these past five years because of a heart condition. Because of his heart he was recently hospitalized but was sent home for a rest period. An especially severe and sudden attack brought about his death Monday, March 1, 1954 at 10:15 p.m. He died in the home he loved and enjoyed to the last, the loving care of his devoted wife. A kindly husband and father, he was also an ardent sportsman who greatly enjoyed the beauty of God's out-of-doors. He is remembered by a host of friends throughout Iowa.

Surviving are his wife, Emma, and his daughter Katheryn, now Mrs. Ovid Toresdahl of Eagle Grove; two brothers, Raymond D. Groom of Cushing, Iowa, and Clifford J. Groom of Glendale, California, and three sisters Mrs. H. H. Dorothy of Onawa, Iowa, Mrs. C. C. Scolee of Moville, Iowa, and Mrs. M. M. Schaper of Anthon, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and two sisters.

Funeral services Wednesday, Mar. 3 at 1:30 in Eagle Grove Evangelical Lutheran church were followed by interment in the family plot at Rose Hill cemetery.
