George W. Whyte, Sr [Jr]., 74, prominent Goldfield citizen, was the victim of a fatal heart attack Tuesday afternoon while a spectator at the Clarion-Eagle Grove football game.

He was standing along the west side lines while the game was in progress and suddenly staggered back against a car and sank to the ground. A doctor was called for from the crowd and Dr. MacNaughton soon reached the side of the stricken man. There was nothing to be done and death came in a very few minutes without a struggle and without suffering. Hardly any of the spectators were aware of what was happening and very few knew that the life of one of Wright county's most respected citizens was slipping away.

Mr. Whyte came down to the game with his son, Kenneth Whyte, and his sons-in-law. Earl Anderson and Ray Cunningham.

The funeral services will be held at the home in Goldfield, this Thursday afternoon at 2:30. Additional details concerning this tragedy will be found on the Goldfield page of this newspaper.

Obituary

George Wilson Whyte, only child of Mr. and Mrs. George Whyte, was born in Kirriemuir, Forfarshire, Scotland, Oct. 6, 1856, and died Nov. 11, 1930, at the age of 74 years, 1 month and 5 days.

In the year of 1870, a boy of 14, he and his parents came to this country from Scotland and settled near Traer, Iowa.

In the spring of 1881, he moved to a farm near Goldfield, later to the farm now owned by James McGowen. On Dec. 29 of the same year, he was married to Agnes Weir Stevenson and for forty-nine years they entered into the life of the town and community. He was anticipating the celebration of their golden wedding which would have occurred in December, 1931. To this union were born eleven children.

He left the farm in the fall of 1891 to engage in mercantile business in Goldfield in which he continued until the day of his death.

He was a faithful member of the United Presbyterian church for many years. He was always interested in the progress of the church both, for himself and his family.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two children, Lawrence Parker and Inez, who died at an early age, and one grandchild, Robert McGowan.

He leaves to mourn his passing, a beloved wife, nine children, George H., John S., Kenneth M., Mrs. Earl Anderson, Mrs. W. E. McGowan, Mrs. Ray Cunningham, all of Goldfield; Mrs. W. A. Ottilie of Manchester; Mrs. Gilbert Henry of Ackley, and Mrs. Eliot Sevareid of Dows; sixteen grandchildren and two great grandchildren besides a host of other relatives and friends both here and in Tama county.

For him this earthly life is ended.
He heard the call, we all will some day hear,
And leaving pain and weariness behind him
Rejoiced to think of Heaven's joys so near.

Why should we grieve because his heavenly journey
Came all too soon for those who loved him well.
Let us forget our loneliness and glory
That heaven is his and glories none may tell.

And while we keep him ever in remembrance
Let us not grieve but Joy that joy is his,
And someday we will lay aside our burdens
And join him in the land of endless bliss.
