OTTUMWA — Dr. D. Dale Emerson, 79, of 12844 Angle Road, died Wednesday, September 7, 2005, at Ottumwa Regional Health Center. He was born August 11, 1926 in Eagle Grove, Iowa to Clarence and Nellie Bawn Emerson. He married Julie Swanson in 1959. She preceded him in death in 1981. He married Sharyn Colby in 1982. She survives.
He was a member of First Lutheran Church. From 1946-1948 he served in the U.S. Army and was stationed in occupied Japan at Sugamo Prison as an MP. He attended Iowa State University and the University of Iowa receiving his medical degree in 1956. During 1956-1957, he served his internship at St. Louis Hospital. In 1957 he began his family medical practice in Ottumwa. He also served John Deere Ottumwa Works as a medical consultant for many years. He retired January 1998.
Survivors include one daughter, Sylvia Emerson of Rockford, Ill.; two stepsons, Michael (Stacy) Colby of Worchester, Vt. and Todd (Elizabeth) Colby of Brooklyn, N.Y.; a step granddaughter, Isabel Burnstein Colby; and one brother, Dr. Wayne Emerson of Eagle Grove, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Dr. Orin Emerson and Gerald Emerson; and one sister, Joan Whitmer.
Funeral service will be noon Saturday, September 10, 2005, at First Lutheran Church with Rev. Ralph Kister officiating. Open visitation begin Friday at 9 a.m. at Robertson-Jay Funeral Home with family present from 7-8 p.m. Memorials may be made to First Lutheran Church, Hospice, Dialysis Unit or Heartland Humane Society. Robertson-Jay Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
