Andrew G. Berkland, an old and respected citizen of Eagle Grove, died on last Friday, June 16th. He was buried Sunday; the services being held in the Samuel Lutheran church in the presence of many neighbors and friends.
A postmortem examination and coroner's inquest was held over the remains in the Porter undertaking parlors on Saturday afternoon conducted under the direction of Dr. J. H. Sams, county coroner, in which he was assisted by Drs. Morse, McNaughton and O'Toole of this city.
The jury empaneled consisted of Matt Spangler, W. H. Cowan and a Clarion man who came over with Dr. Sams, and their finding was to the effect that Mr. Berkland came to hit death by external violence administered by someone.
As a result of the finding of the coroner’s jury, Thos. Netland was arrested on the charge of manslaughter and in the justic court of S. H. Williamson was held in bail in the amount of $1,000 which he furnished pending the preliminary hearing set for next Monday.
Mr. Berkland was 73 years of age and was apparently a helpless, harmless old man. Mr. Netland has been for many years a resident of our city and has always borne a good reputation. In every sense of word, it is a very sad and unfortunate affair and will likely go to the grand jury in October.
Mr. Hans Berkland of Vincent, Henry Berkland of Boone, and Andrew Berkland of California, sons of the deceased, were present at the funeral.

____________________________________________________________After a trial lasting two days, in justic court, Thos. Hetland charged with manslaughter upon the person of A. G. Berkland, goes free. The court found that the evidence against him was insufficient to hold him to the grand jury and the case was dismissed.
Owing to the illness of Aaron Yearous, justice of the peace, the case was tried before Mayor Blake.
Thos. Netland has charge of all the lamps in the Northwestern cars and has a box car office at the side of the track. Mr. Berkland was passing by one day, several months ago, and he stopped in for a chat. The men had some dispute of some kind and it is said that Netland pushed him from the office, and it was charged that he struck him, but this is where the evidence was insufficient.
