Hans Berkland
12 February 1871 ---- 5 May 1925Hans Berkland was buried in Rose Hill cemetery last Thursday afternoon. The services were held in the Methodist church with Rev. Muhleman in charge. The deceased was a member of the Eagle Grove Odd Fellows Lodge for 33 years and that order gave its burial service at the grave with Art Goad as leader.
Mr. Berkland was universally well liked and respected. He was generous to a fault, contributing hundreds of dollars to charity which very few people, knew anything about. He would share his last dollar with a friend who might be in need. To his family he was most kind. They have the heartfelt sympathy of everybody in the hour of their greatest sorrow.
Obituary
(By Rev. W. G. Muhleman)Hans Berkland was born in Norway Feb. 12, 1871. He came to America in 1883 and settled in Story City, Iowa, where he completed his education. When he was 18 years of age, he came to Eagle Grove. On Feb 11, 1892 he was united in marriage to Matilda Olson of Eagle Grove. In 1899 he moved to Vincent and in 1914 he returned to Eagle Grove where he has lived up till the time of his death. For a number of years, he was engaged in the lumber business. In 1909 he entered the drainage and construction business as contractor.
He was confirmed in the Lutheran faith at Story City, Iowa, at the age of 14 years. He was largely responsible for the erection of the Lutheran church Vincent. He was affiliated with the Order of Elks of Fort Dodge and for 33 years he was a member of the Odd Fellows of Eagle Grove.
He was the father of eight children, Olive, Marion, Omer, and Peter of Eagle Grove, Iowa; Alfred of Forest City; Herman of Austin, Minn.; and Mrs. Lee Parker of Sioux City and Mrs. Ralph Bellows who preceded him in death on Aug. 9, 1924. In addition to the children already mentioned he is survived by his wife and three brothers, Andrew of Thor, Henry and Goodmen.
Mr. Berkland has been in failing health for some time. The end came on May 5, 1925, at which time he was 51 years, 2 months, and 23 days old.
Hans Berkland was one of those kind, big hearted souls who was always cheerful himself and he tried to make others so by the life he lived and by what he did for them. His hand and his money were always ready to help those in need.
But best of all, his faith in God and his Savior was beautiful indeed. He did not fear death but expressed himself as being ready to go when God called him.
His wife and children hold sacred the memory of a kind and loving husband and father who was the pal that his children ever had.
Funeral services were held in the Methodist church and the sermon was preached by W. G. Muhleman. Interment was made in Rose Hill cemetery.
