Norbert J. Vorrie, 72, of Fort Dodge, died Friday, April 2, 2004, at the Trinity Regional Hospital in Fort Dodge.

Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 6, 2004, at the Ullensvang Lutheran Church in Thor with the Rev. Keith Sievers officiating. Burial was in the Blossom Hill Cemetery in rural Badger.

Norbert James Vorrie was born March 19, 1932, on a farm near Thor in Norway Township, in Humboldt County, the son of John and Ida (Sheldon) Vorrie. He attended country schools, worked on the family farm, and graduated from Eagle Grove High School in 1950. He attended Luther College at Decorah and in 1955 graduated from Iowa State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Agricultural Engineering. He was then employed by General Motors Corporation at Indianapolis, Indiana as an application engineer in the new development of torque converters and power shift transmissions for earthmovers and off highway equipment. He moved to Los Angeles, California where he was employed by Douglas Aircraft Company and Marquardt Corporation as a design engineer on missile and space systems. Due to failing health he returned to Iowa to his parent's farm to retire and help with its management.

He moved to Fort Dodge in 1993 and on November 10, 2000, at the United Lutheran Church in Shelby. Iowa, he married Betty Ann Berner, his care attendant for several years. He was a member of the Thor Lutheran Church and held lifetime membership in the Iowa State University Alumni Association and the U. S. Metric Association.

He is survived by his wife, Betty Ann, a brother, C. Lorelle Vorrie, and his wife, Betty, of Fort Dodge, a brother-in-law, James E. Young, of Las Cruces, New Mexico; a sister-in-law, Isabel Vorrie, of Green Valley, Ariz., four nephews, one niece, 10 great-nephews, one great-niece, step-children, Diane Dobkins and her husband, Steve, of Phoenix, Ariz., Colleen McClue and her husband, Charles, of Scranton, and Duane Berner and his wife, Mendy, of Stuart, seven step-grandchildren, and two step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Everett, a sister, Frances, and a step-grandson.

The Mason-Lindhart Funeral Home of Humboldt was in charge of the arrangements.
