Marjorie Lela Rompf Groves

Marjorie Lela Groves, the daughter of Bessie and William Rompf, was born May 8, 1919, in Eagle Grove, Iowa. She attended Eagle Grove Junior College and graduated from Drake University. She next attended Des Moines Business College and worked as a legal secretary in Des Moines. In 1945, she married H. Max Groves. In 1956, she initiated the family Cornish hen production on the family farm. She later divorced.

Marjorie was a member of Equality Club and the American Association of University Women. She served as chair of the United Way Campaign. She was a Cub Scout and Brownie Scout leader. Marjorie was a devoted member of the Congregational United Church of Christ. Her roles included president of the Women's Guild, deacon, and ministerial search committee member, among others. She served two terms as Sunday School Superintendent, the two terms running 50 years apart. Marjorie was a passionate cook and nutritionist. Her contributions to church suppers and bake sales included specialties of apple dumplings, chicken salad with grapes, vegetable soup, and jams.

She attended Iowa State University in 1968 and studied counseling. She was a lifelong learner, always reading and considering new ideas.

Marjorie passed away on January 21, 2010, in Sun City, Ariz. She was preceded in death by her parents; and only sibling, Wilmer Rompf. Survivors include her children Jason (Betsy) Groves, Rapid City, S.D., Richard Groves, Sun City, Barbara Groves, DeKalb, Ill., granddaughters, Ethnie (Kyle) Treick, Aurora, Colo., Davina (Matt) Lockhart, Spirit Lake, and Brie Groves, Spearfish, S.D., and grandson, Dorian Lockhart, Mandeville, La.

A memorial service was held January 30, at the United Church of Christ.
