Clarence M. Patterson

C. M. Patterson passed away at the Lutheran Hospital at Fort Dodge early Saturday morning, Apr. 4, 1936, after a brief illness, from a blood clot near the heart and internal complications. He collapsed in the store last Thursday evening, put in a night of intense pain, and on Friday morning was taken to the hospital. Mr. Patterson had been in poor health for some time, but had been on his feet almost to the last and did his work in an uncomplaining way. At the hospital everything known to science was used in an effort to save his life, but he gradually weakened and passed away as stated. During his last hours he was visited by his daughter, Mrs. Lester Burgess, and the granddaughter, Joan Burgess, whom he had not previously seen, and this visit greatly pleased him. Both his daughter, and the son, Owen K. Patterson, were with him when the end came.

Clarence MacClay Patterson was born on Mar. 31, 1871, at Academia, Penn., the son of Sarah and David Patterson, hence was slightly past 65 years of age when the summons came. In his early youth Mr. Patterson came to live in the home of his uncle and aunt, Rev. and Mrs. R. E. Flickinger, at Fonda, Iowa, and grew to manhood there. He attended the Fonda schools and Buena Vista College at Storm Lake. As a young man he left Fonda to engage in the mercantile business at Goldfield, remaining in the mercantile business the rest of his life. While at Goldfield he met Miss Lillian Keister, and on June 1, 1890 [1899], was united in marriage to her. Later he moved to Gilmore City and for a time was employed in White & Hatfield’s store, and with Layman Beers eventually purchased the store. This partnership existed for four years, when Mr. Patterson sold his interest and moved ot Rolfe. That was 28 years ago. He was at first employed by Hauck & Co. and later left this firm to open a store of his own, known as the Pure Food Grocery. He has been in business almost continually since.

In passing he leaves his wife, one daughter, Mrs. Lester Burgess of Chicago, and one son, Owen K. Patterson of Rolfe; also, two grandchildren, Jack Patterson of Rolfe and Joan Burgess of Chicago.

Mr. Patterson was a member of the Presbyterian church, making a public profession of his faith early in life. He was known as a good salesman, extreme courtesy marking his contact with the public. The business places of Rolfe closed out of respect to him during the funeral service Tuesday afternoon.

Funeral services were held for him Tuesday afternoon at the Presbyterian church, with his former pastor, Rev. J. P. Lester, preaching the sermon, assisted by Rev. H. A. Sinning. Interment was in Clinton-Garfield Cemetery. Music was supplied by a mixed quartet composed of Mrs. C. B. Bowen, Mrs. C. J. White, H. A. Sinning and Billy McIntire, with Mrs. C. E. Boyce at the organ. The pall bearers were J. H. Brinkman, O. B. Fuller, E. Meech, Wm. Matteson, A. K. Shaw and J. T. Grant.

Relatives and family connections from out of town attending the services were Mr. and Mrs. Frank Kiester and Mrs. Devere Keister of Elmore, Minn.; Jeanette Mussman of Kalona, Iowa; French Patterson, an only brother, of Rockwell City; Mr. and Mrs. Lester Burgess of Chicago; Mr. and Mrs. Mack Keister of Eagle Grove; Mrs. Geo. Keister and son, Lon, and Mr. and Mrs. Floy Larsen of Goldfield; Mr. and Mrs. Charles Thomas and Gerald Thomas of Marathon; Mr. and Mrs. T. J. O'Donnell of Spencer.
