Mark Maland, 53, of Mason City, died Thursday (Dec. 18, 2003) at his home of natural causes. Memorial service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with the Rev. Kenneth Hatland officiating. Burial will be at a later date. A gathering of family and friends will be held at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave. for one hour prior to services. Memorials may be directed to the North Iowa Transition Center or to Trinity Lutheran Church.

Mark Maland was born July 14, 1950, at Sioux City, Iowa, and adopted as a baby by Lesmore and Alberta Maland of rural Kanawha. Mark grew up on his parents' farm, graduated from Kanawha High School, Waldorf College, and attended Luther College. He was a longtime member of St. John Lutheran Church, rural Kanawha, and later a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Mason City. Mark had a love for music and sang in the choirs of both churches. In 1987, following his father's heart attack, Mark was accepted as a patient at the North Iowa Transition Center where he had lived the past 16 years.

Mark is survived by an aunt and uncle; and several cousins. Mark was preceded in death by his parents. Major Erickson Funeral Home & Crematory.
