5 March 1886 --- 10 May 1935

Torbjorn Sjursen Berge was born to parents, Sjur and Ingeborg Berge, at Berge, in Strandebarm, Hardangar, Norway, March 5, 1886 and died at Eagle Grove, Iowa, Friday, May 10, 1935, aged 49 years, 21 months and 5 days.

He was baptized into Christ Jesus on the 25th day of April, 1886, received instruction and confessed his Christian faith on the 30th of September, 1900, in the Strandebarm church. He spent his youth in the home vicinity.

In the spring of 1907 he emigrated to America, coming to Eagle Grove, Iowa, in the 17th day of May. Since then Eagle Grove has been his home. He entered the service of the Chicago and Northwestern railroad in the bridge and building department. Tom never married, but made his home for many years with his sister, Mrs. Hannah Hetland.

Last fall his health began to fail. Medical aid was sought, but no permanent help could be had. He gradually grew weaker until he departed from this life in peace. He is now survived by five sisters: Christie, Anna, Torbjor, and Mrs. Ingborg Eide, all of Norway, and Mrs. Hannah Hetland here in Eagle Grove, also by his niece, Myrtle Hetland, together with a large number of relatives and friends.

Tom was of a kind disposition, faithful to his friends. He never criticized or spoke ill of anyone. During his prolonged illness he never complained, but he thanked God for the opportunity God gave him, for it was on his sick bed he found peace with his Saviour and experienced a true conversion and found the way back to the God of his parents and his childhood. He confessed that life without Jesus is an empty life, and the joy in the world is not real joy. He was very thankful to his sister, Mrs. Hetland, and Myrtle, who so faithfully cared for him during his illness.

Funeral services were held Monday afternoon from the home at 1:30 and from Eagle Grove Lutheran church at 2. Burial was made in Rose Hill cemetery.
