David L. Hiemstra

David L. Hiemstra, 72, of Clarion passed away Monday, April 27, 2020 at MercyOne Medical Center in Mason City due to complications of heart surgery.

Private family graveside services will be held at 10:00 AM on Saturday, May 9, 2020 at Evergreen Cemetery in Clarion.

David Lynn, son of Herman and Virginia (McGrath) Hiemstra, was born on February 29, 1948 in Grand Rapids, Michigan. When David was two years old, his family moved back to the family farm near Clarion. He graduated from Clarion High School in 1968.

In 1968, David was united in marriage to Jane Sobolik and later divorced. David served two years in the Army in Okinawa, Japan during Vietnam. David farmed for many years in the Clarion area and also worked at Meredith in maintenance as a mechanic. On May 1, 2004, David was united in marriage to Linda Ede in Clarion.

David was an avid fisherman. He had so much fishing equipment, his family called him “Cabela Junior”. He also loved to garden and take care of his many flowerbeds. He enjoyed genealogy research and boring his family with the many stories he would find.

David is survived by his wife Linda of Clarion; two children Mike Hiemstra of Sandstone, Minnesota and Todd (Jessica) Hiemstra of Williams, Iowa; brother Dale (Colleen) Hiemstra of Boone; three sisters Paula Harms of Belmond, Cheryl Graddick of Ames, and Karen (Steve) Marvets of Clarion; grandchildren Seth & Sarah Hiemstra; Makayla & Makenzie & Brittany Waddell & Ethan Kisner; great-grandchildren Brailyn Harris, Mykal Mitchell, and Zakai Jones.

He is preceded in death by his parents; sister Ellen Hiemstra; wife Jeannine Smith in 2001 who died of cancer.
