Alfred Joseph Shurson
15 June 1904 --- 13 September 1985

Alfred Joseph Shurson, the son of Tom O. and Ada Johnson Shurson, was born on a farm in Norway Township near Kanawha, Iowa, on June 15, 1904. He lived near Kanawha, then Jackson, Minn., and later moved to Eagle Grove. On August 4, 1926 he was united in marriage with Gladys T. Arthur at Jackson, Minn. The couple lived in Eagle Grove most of their married life, where he was a section foreman for the Chicago-Great western Railroad for many years. The couple also lived at Mason City, Hampton, Rowan and Somers, Iowa, while he worked for the railroad. He retired in 1969.

He was a good husband and father, loved to work in the garden; to go fishing; was an artist and had painted several pictures; loved music and played the organ at home; also did some TV repair work and built several pieces of furniture. He was a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church and the Railroad Ways Union.

He died early Friday morning, Sept. 13, 1985, at the Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines, where he had been a patient for the past five weeks. He attained the age of 81 years, two months and 28 days.

Surviving are his wife, Gladys T. Shurson of Eagle Grove; a daughter, Betty, Mrs. Joseph Pepples of Grimes, Iowa; two granddaughters, Jennifer, Mrs. Wayne Priest of Perry, Iowa, and Cynthia, Mrs. William John of Burnsville, Minn.; three great grandchildren, Tammy, Randy and Shelly Priest, all of Perry; and other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two infant children, Joel and Sue; a grandchild, Cathy; and several brothers and sisters.

Funeral services for Alfred J. Shurson, 81, of Eagle Grove, were held Monday, Sept. 16, 1985 at l:30 p.m. at the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Eagle Grove. Rev. Paul Schaedig, church pastor, officiated and burial was in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Eagle Grove. Visitation was held on Sunday at the Kastler-Babcock Funeral Home.
