Douglas Dartt Dittmar was born in Minneapolis on November 6, 1934 to Elmer and Okalla Dartt Dittmar. He grew up near Chicago, graduated from Glenbard High School in Glen Ellyn, Illinois, and from Monmouth College in Illinois in 1956. He was drafted during the Korean War and was a member of the United States Army from 1957 to 1960. While he was in the Army he was a member of NSA as a Russian Language Specialist. He then worked for The Insurance Co of North America in Milwaukee and Des Moines and for Jester Insurance Agency in Des Moines.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Betsy Dittmar and his brother John Dittmar. He is survived by his wife Barbara and his step-son Jack Tow and step-sons and step-daughters-in- law Rob Tow and Brenda Laurel, Bill and Vicki Tow, and 5 step-grandchildren Suzanne, Kathleen, Emily, Spencer and Benjamin Tow. He died November 15th, 2019 in Des Moines.
