March 4, 1849 --- August 25, 1927

Hannah E. Shore was born in Pennsylvania, March 4th, 1849, and died in Goldfield, Iowa, August 25th, 1927, being 78 years, 5 months, and 21 days of age at the time of her death.

She was married to T. L. Knight in Illinois, December 27th, 1866. They moved to Tama county, Iowa, in the spring of 1868, and came to Goldfield in the spring of 1891. To this union nine children were born, of whom eight are still living in the order of their ages as follows: W. C. Knight, Goldfield; Mrs. Margaret B. Robinson, Mason, Mich.; F. F. Knight, Goldfield; Mrs. Lottie L. Miller, Ada, Minn.; Mrs. Celestia M. Samuels, Goldfield; T. A. Knight, Goldfield; Mrs. Nellie Leach, Dixon, Ill.; and J. A. Knight, Goldfield. In addition to the above she leaves to mourn her passing the husband, T. L. Knight, and a brother, Matthew Shore, of Woosung, Ill., now in feeble health. There are also twenty-six grandchildren and thirty-six great grandchildren.

She joined the Christian church in a young womanhood and remained faithful to the end. She was also a charter member of Goldfield Rebekah Lodge No. 300, and a member of the D. O. C.

Special mention should be made of the unselfish devotion of her granddaughter, Eura Knight, who gave all of her time to the care of the home and to the deceased during the years of her declining health.

Mrs. Knight was essentially a pioneer. Tama County was still in the wild state in 1868. She lived there until 1891—23 years—and during that time lived the life of the pioneer. There, the children were born under true frontier conditions. I have always thought that when the Books are finally opened these martyrs to the cause of civilization, the mothers, will be given a more prominent place. She next moved, in the year 1891, to Wright county, and again settled on a farm and bore the hardships incident to a new country. Wright county at that time was far from what we know it today. Roads were trails, social advantage were few though we did have churches and christian surroundings. During all these years of trial and hardship, she clung to her earlier faith. She raised large family, all of whom have gone out into the world to do their part, and she never has had cause to regret the earlier teachings of christian faith instilled around the rude hearth stone.

She celebrated her fiftieth wedding anniversary eleven years ago at which time all the children and many of the grand and great-grandchildren were present. Fifty years of married life is unusual, gut sixty-one is more unusual, few indeed attain to this distinction.

To the waiting husband whose sun of life is casing his horizontal ray, we can only say: “The departed was a faithful christian wife, mother, and partner during all these years and now that she has gone the separation can be for only a short time, a hearty welcome awaits him, ‘on the other shore.’ ”
