Charles B Hathaway
26 January 1845 ---- 10 May 1916

Charles Bradford Hathaway was born January 26th, 1845 in Taunton, Mass., and died May 10th, 1916 in this city after an illness of seven months. His age at the time of his death was 71 years, 3 months and 14 days.

When he was ten years old he moved with his parents to Bureau county, Illinois, but at the outbreak of the Civil War they returned to Massachusetts where his father enlisted in a Massachusetts regiment. During the Civil War he worked in the Colts Rifle factory in Hartford, Conn. where he learned the machinists trade. In the year 1866 he and his parents returned to their farm in Illinois. In 1869 he was married to Hannah T. Giffing. To this union were born 8 children, 3 of whom, Anna, Grace, and Earl are deceased.

The first fifteen years of their married life was spent on a farm in Bureau county, Illinois and in 1886 they moved to this city, where he has been engaged in business until his retirement about a year ago.

He has been a member of the Masonic lodge for 33 years and was a charter member of the Eastern Star Chapter and was also a member of the Modern Woodmen of America.

He is survived by his wife and five children, Frank, of St. Paul, Minnesota; Leonard, of St. Cloud, Minnesota; Mrs. W. J. Riley of Des Moines, Iowa; Mrs. F. C. Miler and Miss Hazel of Eagle Grove, also six grandchildren and one brother, Otis L., formerly of this city, all of whom were present at the funeral.

Mr. Hathaway was a most kind and affectionate husband and father and his genial spirit made a friend of everyone who knew him.

The funeral was held at the Methodist church Friday afternoon. Rev. S. M. Van Cleve read the scriptures and made the prayer and Rev. L. M. Pierce preached the sermon.

At the grave [Rose Hill Cemetery] the usual Masonic ceremonies were observed with H. V. Barnes reciting the beautiful and impressive ritual and Harold Davidson the prayer.
