Services for Ruth Halvorsen, a Baptist Memorial Home resident in Harlan were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday (Aug. 11) at Holmes (Ia) Baptist Church. Burial was at Glenwood Cemetery, Goldfield, Ia.
Mrs. Halvorsen, 76, died Sat. Aug. 8, 1987, at Baptist Memorial Home in Harlan, where she had resided.
Surviving are her husband, the Rev. Phillip Halvorsen, a Baptist Memorial Home resident in Harlan; a daughter, Sharon Hess, and her husband, the Rev. David Hess of Harlan; two sons, Robert Halvorsen of Augusta, GA., and James Halvorsen of Des Moines; 16 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; five brothers: Joe Peterson of Amboy, IL., William Peterson of Eagle Grove, Rueben Peterson of Kanawha, Ia., George Peterson of Clarion, and Clarence Peterson of Eagle Grove; and a sister, Edith Spangler of Eagle Grove.
A prayer service was held Monday evening at Pauley Funeral Home in Harlan, with visitation after 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Holmes Baptist Chruch.

Ruth Marion Halvorsen, the daughter of Nels Peter and Frederica (Matson) Peterson was born on November 16, 1910, on the family farm four miles west of Goldfield, Iowa. She attended country school near Goldfield for her first eight grades, and in 1928, she graduated from Goldfield High School.On November 9 [8], 1929, she was united in marriage to Philip R. Halvorsen at the home of her parents. They had three children.
In January of 1956, Ruth enrolled in Eagle Grove Junior College from which she graduated in 1958. She taught in the Eagle Grove Community Schools from the fall of 1958 to the spring of 1970.
Pastor and Mrs. Halvorsen have served churches in Kasson, Minn.; Gary, Ind., Bremen, Ind.; Omaha, Neb.; and Holmes, Iowa. They moved to Harlan in 1986, and became residents of the Baptist Memorial Home in May of 1986.
Ruth was a member of the Holmes Baptist Church in Holmes and also a lifetime member of the Iowa State Education Association and also the National Education Association.
Ruth Halvorsen died August 8, 1987 at the Baptist Memorial Home in Harlan, Iowa, at the age of 76 years, eight months, and 23 days.
Ruth was preceded in death by her parents, and two brothers, Elmer and Lawrence Peterson.
She is survived by her husband, Rev. Philip R. Halvorsen of the Baptist Memorial Home in Harlan; two sons, Robert D. Augusta, Ga., and James R. of Des Moines; a daughter, Mrs. David (Sharon) Hess of Harlan; 16 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren; five brothers, Joe Peterson of Amboy, Ill.; William and Clarence Peterson of Eagle Grove; Rueben Peterson of Kanawha; George S. Peterson of Clarion; one sister, Edith Spangler of Eagle Grove, nieces, nephews and many relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, August 11, 1987, at 2 p.m. at the Holmes Baptist Church in Holmes, Iowa, with Pastor David Hess of the Grace Baptist Church in Harlan officiating.
Interment was in the Glenwood Cemetery, Goldfield.
