John Howard Nelsen
15 September 1896 ---- 13 October 1984

John Howard Nelsen, the son of Robert and Sena Hansen Nelsen, was born on a farm near Goldfield on Sept 15, 1896. He grew up on the family farm and received his education in the rural schools. During World War I he served in the U. S. Army and after receiving his discharge he returned to the Goldfield area. On October 23, 1923, he was united in marriage with Alma Thompson at Eagle Grove. They made their home on a farm near Goldfield for several years and later moved to a farm near Holmes where they lived and farmed for [unreadable] years. In 1962, John and Alma retired and moved to Eagle Grove. They are longtime members of the Samuel Lutheran Church in Eagle Grove.

He died on Saturday afternoon Oct 13, 1984 at the Clarion Community Memorial Hospital, where he had been a patient since Monday. He had been in ill health for the past six months. He attained the age of 88 years and 28 days.

Surviving are his wife, Alma Thompson Nelsen of Eagle Grove, a daughter, Janice, Mrs. David Soma of Eagle Grove; three sons, Roger Nelsen of Clarion, John Nelsen, Jr. of Holmes; Donavon Nelsen of Clarion, nine grandchildren, four great grandchildren; a sister Esther, Mrs. Peter Nelson of Eagle Grove and other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, five sisters and two brothers and a great grandchild.

Funeral services for John H. Nelsen, age 88, of Eagle Grove were held on Tuesday afternoon at 1 p.m. at the Samuel Lutheran Church, Eagle Grove. Rev. Carlton Shaw, church pastor, officiated and burial was in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Eagle Grove. Visitation was held on Monday at the Kastler-Babcock Funeral Home.
