June 6, 1911 ---- September 24, 1979

Harold Franklin Anderson, former resident of Long Beach, Calif. for over 32 years and for the last two years a resident of Poulsbo, Wash. died Sept. 24 of cancer at the age of 68. Anderson was a Chief Machinist Mate in the United States Navy for
22 years.

He was born June 6, 1911, the son of Bert C. and Carrie Marie Anderson. He is survived by his wife, Wilma Katherine and daughter, Mrs. Rome Lee (Mary Carrene) Casper of Long Beach, Calif.; five grandchildren: Cari Kathleen, Dawn Marie, Christa Delores, James Harold and Sarah Margaret also survive. Other survivors include his brother, Caryle B. Anderson of Eagle Grove; sisters: Lillian Ford of Adel and Viola Julis, Shenandoah, Mrs. Lawrence (Olive) Petty, Lancaster, Calif, and a nephew, Michael B. Anderson of Minneapolis, Minn.

During World War II, Chief Anderson served aboard the John D. Edwards in the Asiatic-Pacific, North and South Atlantic, European, and North African theaters of operation. After the war he became a member of the Moth Ball Fleet in Long Beach, attached to the Isle Royal, and then served 6-1/2 years aboard the USS Toledo, operating in the Far East with the Pacific Fleet during and after the Korean Conflict where he was awarded several commendations.

Anderson's last two and a half years in the Navy were served as a recruiter in the Compton, Calif., area. After his retirement from the Navy he served 15 years as a Certified Employee of the Long Beach Board of Education School District. He devoted a great deal of his time trying to help young adolescents as a Staff Assistant of Wilson high school and jointly with his wife as a leader for the Girl Scouts of America and also as a Foster Parent for 32 children.

Memorials to Chief Anderson may be made to the American Cancer Society through the Virginia Mason Hospital in Seattle, or the Fishline Organization in Poulsbo or Winslow, Wash.

Graveside services were held on Tuesday, Oct. 9 at Rose Hill Cemetery, Eagle Grove.
