John Edward Oldaker, son of John Henry and Edna Tellier Oldaker, was born October 20, 1901 in Wright County, Iowa. He attended country school and Eagle Grove High School. Following his schooling, he farmed and raised purebred livestock on the farm that he lived on for 61 years.
On January 12,1949, he was united in marriage to Ethel Neva DeVries at the home of her parents, Robert and Kate DeVries in Buffalo Center, Iowa. In 1962, he moved with his family to Primghar where his wife was Iowa State University Extension Home Economist. In August of 1978, they moved to Hamburg to be near their daughter and son-in-law.
John was an active member of the United Methodist Church in the communities where he lived. While in the Eagle Grove area he was a member of' the Evergreen Sporting Association, Izaak Walton League, and served as a 4-H leader.
In Primghar he was town assessor and helped organize the Senior Citizens Association. He worked in taxidermy and woodworking.
John Oldaker died December 21, 1988 at the Shenandoah hospital after a long illness at the age of 87 years, two months, and one day.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Blanche Holm and Alice Marolf.
He is survived by his wife, Ethel; his daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. David A. (Ruth) Welchans; two grandchildren, Thomas Oldaker Welchans and Jacqueline Hope Welchans all of Hamburg, one sister, Lynn Conregy of Des Moines; and one niece, Velva Lee of Carlisle, Iowa.
Funeral services were held from the First United Methodist Church of Hamburg on Friday, December 23, 1988. The Rev. Norman Walter officiated. A final prayer was given by the Rev. Ross Boyce of Hamburg,
Interment was in the Hamburg Cemetery with the Rash Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
