Funeral For W. McCutcheon Here Today

Wright County Pioneer Dies Tuesday Morning; Ailing For Several Years

William McCutcheon, 87, passed away at his home in Goldfield early Tuesday morning this week. His death was attributed to complications due to old age. Mr. McCutcheon had not been in good health for many months. Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon at 2 o’clock at the home. Rev. Mann, pastor of the Clarion Presbyterian Church will conduct the services. Burial will be made in Glenwood Cemetery.

William McCutcheon was born in Barhill, Ayrshire Scotland, January 14th, 1850. At the age of 21 he came to America and for six years made his home near Traer in Tama County, Iowa. In 1877 he was united in marriage to Martha Stevenson. In 1882 they moved to Goldfield and located on a farm in the Evergreen neighborhood. Here they made their home for thirty years, where they reared their family of ten children, all except one, Hugh, who died at the age of 18 years, are surviving to mourn his passing. In 1912 they left the farm and moved to town where he has made his home until his death.

At an early age he united with the Established Church in Scotland. Upon his arrival in Traer he united with the Tranquility Church near Traer, one of the first churches organized in Tama County. When he moved to Goldfield, he was instrumental in the organization of the United Presbyterian Church where he was a charter member, and was so honored at the recent 50th anniversary of the local church. Until his health failed, he attended regularly, always being found on Sabbath morning occupying the same seat and giving attentive ear to the sermon. At home he was very devout in his love for his Master and up to his closing days, never failed to ask Grace before partaking of food.

To his wife and helpmate he gave his untiring love and devotion, always a kind word in time of pain or pleasure. To all the members of his family he gave generously and was always delighted to have them stop and pay him a visit.

In his passing he leaves his devoted wife, nine children, John, Will, Mrs. Frank Bjornson, Mrs. Art Bjornson, Mrs. C. F. Axon and Mrs. Glen Trotter of Goldfield, Mrs. Penn Eckles [Eckels] of Britt, Mrs. Sam Umstead of Eagle Grove, and Mrs. Paul Pardun of Clarion. One brother, Andrew, of Goldfield, and one brother and sister living in Scotland. Also thirty-one grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

Although reaching the advanced age of 87 years, his passing will be a great sorrow to his family and all who knew him.
