Roger Leroy Hinders
4 October 1939 --- 17 August 2014Roger L. Hinders, 74, died August 17, 2014 at his home in Belmond following a short battle with cancer. A family celebration of Roger's life will be held at the Stohres Ponds Conservation area near Grundy Center, which was one of Roger's favorite places.
Roger Leroy, the son of Tony Leroy and Irene (Sonkens) Hinders, was born October 4, 1939 at Grundy Center. He grew up there and graduated from Grundy Center High School.
Roger had a lifelong passion for the outdoors which led him to careers with the Grundy County Conservation Department, and later with the Ozark Mountain Tackle Company, where he handcrafted thousands of one-of-a-kind fishing lures and flies. Roger crafted each piece of tackle as if it were a fine work of art. He continued to create lures during his retirement and built an extensive collection of lures, reels, and other fishing equipment. He was proud to have made acquaintances with fishing pros such as Roland Martin, Virgil Ward and others.
Roger was married to Mary (Steenblock) Beck of Belmond for more than 40 years. They shared many different interests, including raising coon hounds and show rabbits, dozens of which had brought Roger and Mary numerous Iowa, Minnesota, and regional awards. Roger enjoyed camping with his family, and of course he was an avid fisherman. He loved animals and was very fond of his four-legged companions, such as their Chihuahua. Roger loved baseball and was a die hard Chicago Cubs fan.
Roger will be remembered for his great smile. He was stern in personality and belief, but once he got to know you he was soft-hearted inside. He enjoyed the simple things of life, such as times with his wife, family, friends, and quiet times in nature exploring all the wonders of the world.
He was preceded in death by his parents and grandson Mark Brander. Roger is survived by his wife Mary of Belmond; sons Scott (Dee) Hinders of Ackley and Gene (Terri Bohnsack) Hinders of Hudson; daughters Regina (Paul) VanDiest of Kansas, Rana Beck of Iowa, and Diana Hall of Iowa; sister Bonnie Buseman and her son Mike of Waterloo; and grandchildren.
