February 1, 1872 --- September 11, 1893
Tuesday afternoon at two o’clock the funeral sermon of Matthew Duerst was preached by Rev. A. Plumley in the Baptist Chruch of this place. The deceased was young man of but twenty-one years of age, just, as it were, passing over the threshold into active life. What an eloquent sermon on the frailty and uncertainty of human life was preached by the sudden and shocking accidents of last week. Two strong and vigorous young lives were taken from earth. “God’s ways seem dark, but soon or late, they touch the shining hills of day.” The decree of God are just. The dispensations of Providence are a part of the Great Plan. Though hearts break, and tear-drops fall like rain, yet God is good. He knows best.

G. L. Webster, of this city, desires us to state that his road cart passing along the road in Paine’s woods was not the one that scared the team by which young Duerst lost his life. He passed no team the afternoon of the accident. This statement is made to correct the rumor that he was present at the time of the accident and failed to afford relief.
