William A Melrose
10 February 1865 ---- 30 July 1938

William A. Melrose, passed away at the home of his son, Stanton, in Ottumwa early Saturday morning. Mr. Melrose suffered a stroke about two years ago and since that time has been in poor health. During the past two years he was confined to his home, but was not confined to his bed until just the past few weeks. Hedrick merchants closed their doors for an hour Monday afternoon in memory of one who for so many years was among the leaders of their group.

The body was at the Bowles undertaking rooms until time for the services Monday. Funeral services were held at the Christian church Monday afternoon at two o'clock. The Rev. J. B. Hockersmith, pastor of the church, had charge of the services. Interment was made in the family lot in the Brooks cemetery.

William A. Melrose, son of John Melrose and Mariah Bromley, was born on a farm near Goldfield, Iowa, February 10, 1865, and departed this life in Ottumwa, July 30, 1938, at the age of 73 years, five months and 20 days. His early life was spent in and around Goldfield, later moving near Webster City, where he became manager of the Farmers Grain and Elevator Co.

Here he was united in marriage to Bertha Stanton of Elgin, Iowa, June 4, 1902, who preceded him in death eight years ago. To this union were born four sons.

During his stay of 12 years in this locality he was also employed by the Northwestern railroad as telegraph operator. In 1914 he moved to Hedrick, where he, with his partner W. H. Whiteford, operated a general merchandise business for several years. In 1920 he purchased the grocery business of E. A, Easter, where he was actively engaged until ill health forced him to retire two years ago. He was a member of the Christian church of Hedrick, and was a very ardent worker, always ready and willing to devote his time and services in every possible way.

He leaves to mourn his passing his four sons, Roy of Arlington, Archie, Stanton and Kenneth of Ottumwa, one grandson, Norman Gene Melrose of Arlington, five sisters-in-law, Mrs. Margaret Melrose of Lehigh, Mrs. Henry Herwig of West Union, Mrs. Ina Coulee of San Bernardino, Calif., Mrs. Warren Harrington of Postville and Mrs. John Halverson of Clermont, several nieces and nephews and a large circle of friends.
