Mother Passes to Her Reward
Mrs. Ragnild Simonson, mother of Mrs. Mandus Hetland slept peacefully away at the Hetland home Saturday evening, March 21st, at 11:25. Funeral was held from the Hetland home Wednesday at 12:00 and at the local Lutheran church at 1:00, burial was made in the family lot at the Eagle Grove cemetery. Rev. M. C. Thompson was in charge. The pall bearers were Laverne and Robert Walde, Raymond Hegland, Harvey Severson, Elner and Oscar Hobbet.Mrs. Ragnhild Simonson was born in Christiansund, Norway, February 23, 1855. In early infancy she was baptized and later confirmed in the Lutheran Christian Faith. She attended the schools in childhood, but need in the home compelled her to leave school and work to help maintain the home. In early womanhood she was married to Mr. Simon Simonson, and to this union were born five children, two died in infancy. Her married life was short, for in the spring of 1892 Mr. Simonson died leaving Mrs. Simonson alone with the three daughters.
Four years later in 1896 just after confirmation the oldest daughter Miss Emma left the homeland to come to America, coming to her Aunt Mrs. Sam Peterson in DeKalb Co., Ill., and her father, Omund Haabet, also left the home land to come to America, locating in Leland, Ill. Here Mrs. Simonson and her daughters worked hard to own and
maintain their home. They lived here until 1918, when the death of a daughter, Mrs. Owen Walde [Waldee] caused her to come to Graettinger, Iowa to care for her daughter's children.Since this time she spent her time working for relatives and with her daughters. Four years ago another daughter was called in death, and since that time Mrs. Simonson has spent most of her time with her one remaining child, Mrs. Mandus Hetland. Two years ago she was very ill with trouble in her chest, and it seemed several times that the end was near, but each time she rallied and slowly regained her health. Since this illness she has been quite well. About a week ago she developed a cold, and last Thursday a doctor was called, but her condition was not found to be serious. Last Saturday she was able to be in her chair both in the morning and the afternoon, but toward evening she spoke of being so tired and sleepy.
Shortly after nine o'clock the daughter found her hands and feet cold, so again the doctor was called, and all was done that could be done, but she was tired until death. Her heart failed; and she slept away to go to her Saviour without a pain or struggle, Saturday evening, March 21, at 11:25 being 81 years and 1 month old.
She was a brave Christian mother willing to work hard and sacrifice so as to support herself and family.
She leaves to mourn her death; one daughter, Mrs. Mandus Hetland to Emmetsburg, one step brother in Eagle Grove, two step brothers and step sister in Illinois, eight grandchildren, five great grandchildren, many relatives, Blessed be her memory.
