Obituary

Porter Johnson Webb was born in Portsmouth, W. Va., Feb. 19, 1834, where he lived till he moved, to Iowa. He passed away on Oct. 5, 1923, at the home of his son on South Cadwell avenue, Eagle Grove, Iowa, at the age of 89 years, 7 months and 16 days. His good wife preceded him on April 28, 1903.

Mr. Webb was an old soldier, having served three years in the Civil war as a member of Co. B. of the 2nd Iowa Cavalry. His company was cut to pieces at Farmington, Ky., where he was wounded. Later he went with his battalion on a raid south of Baton Rouge.

Prior to the Civil war Mr. Webb attended Cornell College for two years.

On Feb. 29, 1865, he was married to Margaret Kelsey. One daughter and five sons were born to this union, of whom only two sons survive.

For many years Mr. Webb lived on the farm at Boyden, Iowa, where as one of the early settlers he gave the right-of-way to the railroad that passed through his farm. He also gave town lots to people to encourage them to build up the town.

After the death of his wife he lived at Lake View and for a while he lived at Livermore, but the last few years of his life were spent with his son in Eagle Grove.

It all the deeds of this good man could be written a volume could not contain them all. Mr. Webb was a staunch Christian and a member of the M. E. church in which church he sometimes preached. The influence of his life bore remarkable fruit, in his own family as is evidenced by the fact that one son went as a missionary to Africa, where he died and was burled on the banks of the Congo. Another son became a Methodist preacher, and a daughter married a Methodist preacher.

Porter Johnson Webb leaves to mourn their loss his two sons, Rev. Jas. Kelsey Webb of McPherson, Kans., and Porter Melvin Webb of Eagle Grove, Iowa.
