JOHN S. McCALLUM, PIONEER SETTLER, VICTIM OF HEART ATTACK SATURDAY

John S. McCallum, 73, retired Iowa state highway commission employee and a pioneer resident of this community, passed away quite unexpectedly at his home in Goldfield, early last Saturday morning, January 30, 1943. The immediate cause of death was a heart attack following a few days' illness with influenza.

Funeral services were held at the home at 2:00 o'clock, Monday afternoon, February 1, and at the local United Presbyterian church at 2:30, with the Rev. J. T. Haupt, pastor of the church, officiating. A quartet composed of Harold Scott, Eldon Rasmussen, Edwin Nelson and Howard Stevenson sang two appropriate hymns, accompanied by Mrs. Craig Nelson as pianist. Pallbearers were Albert Hackley, Arthur Cleveland, Magnus Hansen, Frank Miller, Albert McCleery and William McGowan. Interment was made in the family lot in the Glenwood cemetery at Goldfield.

John Sinclair McCallum, the son of Duncan and Catherine Sinclair McCallum, was born near Harris
Creek, Mich., on March 24, 1870, and in that locality his early boyhood days were spent. When young John was twelve years of age, he came with his parents to Illinois, and settled in DeKalb county, where for many years he was a member of the Somonauk United Presbyterian church.

In the year 1895 his parents moved from Illinois to Wright county, Iowa, settling on a farm northeast of Goldfield. Two years later, in 1897, Mr. McCallum was united in marriage to Edythe Pinkham of the town of Goldfield, and five children were born unto this union. One son passed away in infancy, and death claimed the wife and mother of this home on February 16, 1916. Following the death of his wife, Mr. McCallum lived with his children or his parents for many years. In July, 1937, he married Josie Holliday, of Goldfield, who preceded him in death on May 17, 1940.

Mr. McCallum had always enjoyed the best of health, and was unusually active in business enterprises. Following his retirement from the Iowa state highway commission at the age of 70, he became associated with his son, Elmer E. McCallum, in Eagle Grove, and only five days before his death, he was working at his task as usual. He was an active member of the United Presbyterian church in Goldfield, having served as elder for many years, as well as being a leader in Sunday school work and in musical organizations.

Only a few days before he was stricken, Mr. McCallum suffered an attack of influenza, which had confined him to his home here. Last Friday night about midnight, feeling the need of medical services, he called his doctor, who immediately summoned relatives in this vicinity. About two hours later death laid its hand upon his being, and Mr. McCallum passed into eternal sleep. At the time of his death he had reached the age of 72 years and 10 months.

The deceased is survived by four children; two sons and two daughters; Mrs. Hazel Bygness of Goldfield, Mrs. Ferne Swanson of Des Moines, Ralph H. McCallum of Britt and Elmer E. McCallum of
Eagle Grove. He is also survived by one sister, Mrs. Isabella Gano of Santa Barbara, Calif., one brother, Duncan D. McCallum, of Des Moines; five grandchildren and one great grandchild, besides other relatives and a host of friends.

Among those from a distance who came to attend the funeral were the following relatives of the family: Mrs. B. F. Thompson, Mrs. Mabelle Vander Linden, Mrs. A. A. Herrick and Mrs. James M. Stewart, all of Des Moines; Mrs. Fred Voris of Sandwich, Ill., Mr. and Mrs. Mack Keister of Waterloo, the Misses Janet and Cassie Sinclair of Humboldt, and Scott Keister, of Paullina, Iowa. Besides the many relatives, friends also came from Elmore, Minn., and from Clarion, Eagle Grove and Humboldt.
