MRS. J. HUGHES DIED SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 17

Eagle Grove Resident, 79 Years of Age, Buried in Calvary Cemetery, Wednesday Morning, Nov 21.

Mrs. Jane Hughes died at her home on South Cadwell Avenue, Saturday, Nov. 17. Had she lived until May 29th next, she would have been 80 years of age. She was born in Liverpool, England, on May 29, 1849. She was the daughter of Peter and Bridget O'Conner. Her mother died when she was quite young. At the age of 14, she come to this country and lived in Chicago with a sister. She married James Hughes, a civil war veteran at Clifton, Ill., June 22, 1873. Seven years later, in 1880, the family moved to Humboldt county on a farm near Badger and later in 1895 to a new farm home near Goldfield. Three months later, Mr. Hughes died which was in, March, 1895. In the spring of 1897, Mrs. Hughes moved her family to Eagle Grove and has made her home here continuously since that time. She was the mother of eight children, four boys and four girls. Those surviving are: John Hughes, Eagle Grove, Mrs. Dinah McDermott, Iroquois, S. D., Mrs. Margaret DeWitt, Parkerton, Wyo., Mrs. Miranda Spencer, Casper, Wyo. Five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren survive.

Mrs. Hughes was a faithful member of the W. R. C. and the Catholic church. During her thirty-one years residence here, she has made many warm, fast friends who will miss her greatly.

Jane O’Conner, daughter of Peter and Bridget O’Conner, was born in Liverpool, England, May 29, 1849. Her mother died when she was a little girl, but she received the wise and tender care of a devoted father, of whom she always spoke with great reverence and affection.

When she was fourteen she came to the United States and made her home with a sister in Chicago.

She was married to James Hughes, a Civil war veteran, at Clifton, Ill., June 22, 1873.

In 1880 they moved to Humboldt county, Iowa, and settled on a farm near Badger.

In January, 1895, the family moved to a farm near Goldfield. Mr. Hughes death occurred the following March. In 1897, Mrs. Hughes came with her family to Eagle Grove where she has since resided.

She was the mother of eight children, three of whom died in infancy, and Mrs. Sabina Wesley, about twenty years ago. Those surviving the mother are: John of Eagle Grove, Mrs. Dinah McDermott, Iroquois, S. D., Mrs. Margaret DeWitt, Parkerton, Wyo., and Mrs. Miranda Spencer, Casper, Wyo. Mrs. Hughes grandchildren are: John Wesley, Hollywood, Calif., Mrs. Harry Weidenman, Iroquois, S. D. Hughes DeWitt, Roy Spencer and Wilkins, Casper, Wyo., also three great-grandchildren. One sister, Mrs. Bridget Odenwald also survives her.

Mrs. Hughes was a patriotic woman, an active member of the Woman’s Relief Corps. and a faithful member of the Catholic church. She was a devote and prayerful woman, anxious always to be of service to those whom she could help and especially happy in serving her children all of whom bestowed such tender care on her.

Those memories should comfort them in their bereavement as well as the assurance that she has joined the ones whom she loved.

Funeral services were held at the Sacred Heart church and Solemn High Mass was said by Rev. Father Nolan, assisted by Father Torpey of Clarion and Father Barry of Webster City. Father Nolan preached the sermon. Burial was in Calvary cemetery.
