WYATT SMITH DIES AFTER OPERATION
Passed Away Sunday in an Oakland, Calif., Hospital
Funeral Services to Be Held Friday

Wyatt DeVere Smith, 37, died in a hospital in Oakland, Calif., Sunday, following an operation. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joe C. Smith, reside in this city. The remains will be brought to Eagle Grove for burial. The funeral services will be tomorrow, Friday, at 2 p. m. at the Wilson funeral chapel. Burial will be in Rose Hill cemetery. The Rev. L. M. Wilkinson will be in charge.

For the past several years Mr. Smith was employed at the Kaiser shipyards in Oakland. Recently he accepted the position of manager of the "V" Club at Oakland.

Mr. Smith was born in Eagle Grove, July 18, 1905. He was graduated from the Eagle Grove high school with the class of 1924. In his high school he won letters both in basketball and football. He attended Drake University and was a member of one of Coach Ossie Solem's best teams. He played center on one of the Drake teams which played the Navy at Annapolis. On the same team was Harold Stevens of Eagle Grove, and playing with the Navy was Howard Ransford, teammate of Smith and Stevens in high school. At Drake, Smith was a member of Tau Psi fraternity. He was a charter member of the Eagle Grove DeMolay chapter. He was also a member of the Eagles lodge.

Prior to making to making his home in California, Mr. Smith was associated with his father in the shoe business in Eagle Grove.

On Oct. 12, 1926 he was united in marriage with Miss Dorothy Baisley of Des Moines. To this union, one daughter was born Marilyn, who survives. Also surviving to mourn their loss are Mr. Smith's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Smith of Eagle Grove, two brothers, Marvin of Worthington, Minn., and Bernard, now at the Smoky Hill Army air field at Salina, Kans., and one sister, Mrs. R. E. Blair of Chicago.

"Bobo" as he was known to his friends, was very fond of out-of-door sports and never missed participating in the hunting and fishing seasons.
