Uncle "Jimmy" Smith Suffers Stroke, which hastened the end at daughter's home in Ft. Dodge, Ia. Thursday.
James Harmon Smith was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., May 1, 1842, where he lived until 14 yrs. of age, when he moved to Tipton, Ia. where he worked on the farm of James Wingart who became his foster father. Five years later, at age 19, he enlisted in the northern army of the Civil War in Company C. 24th Iowa Infantry, serving 3 years, from 1863 to 1865. He fought in many battles and was with General Sherman part of the time on his famous march to to the sea. Soon after the Civil War, Mr. Smith was married to Sophia Shaffer, who passed away on their farm near Holmes on 29 April, 1887 followed within a week by their 2 daughters, Mrs. Anna Moore and Allie Smith both of Clarion. He was also preceded in death by a 3rd daughter Mrs. Emma Palmer Fisher of Ft. Dodge, Ia. and 2 sons Frank [George Franklin Larick] of Eagle Grove and Charles of Clarion and by one grandson Lloyd Stroup.
In 1891 Mr. Smith was united in marriage to Lucretia Ellison, who passed away in 1914. In 1896 he removed to Clarion. Mr. Smith was a member of the Congregational Church, The Knights of Pythias Lodge and the G.A.R. Post. He leaves to mourn his loss 2 daughters, Mrs. I. A. Stroup of Holmes and Mrs. E. I. Jones of Ft. Dodge, with whom he's made his home since 1915, and 1 son J. Earl of Clarion. He is survived by 14 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.
For nearly a year Mr. Smith was in ill hea1th. A week ago he became worse and took to his bed last Monday, dying Thursday April 12, 1928 at 3:10 am at the home of his daughter in Ft. Dodge of a slight paralytic stroke. Mr. Smith was a man of vigor and activity, of earnest loyalty to the nation and will be missed by his large circle of relatives and friends. Funeral services were held at the Congregational Church Sat. afternoon in charge of the pastor, Rev. H. O. Spelman. Members of the W.R.C. and American Legion attended in a body. The Legion having charge of the grave. Brief remarks by Adj. Champlin, being followed by the firing squad, after which taps were sounded. Burial took place in the family lot in the cemetery at Goldfield.
