Lawrence Herbert Larsen

Lawrence Herbert "Larry" Larsen, 71, a Marion civic leader, veteran of both World War I and World War II and past president of the local-and state reserve officers associations, died at 5:30 p.m. Saturday in his home at 345 Forest Lawn Blvd. Long active in work of the American Red Cross here, Col. Larsen was executive director of Marion County Chapter, a past chapter chairman, member of the board 35 years and at the time of his death, chairman of the house committee. He had been on the Marion Board of Health for 18 years and was a member of Marion Regional Planning Commission.

Born Jan. 30, 1900, in Brooklyn, N. Y., he was the son of John and Sophie Olson Larsen. He was a member of Emanuel Lutheran Church; Sojourner Lodge 653, F&AM; Marion Chapter 62, RAM; Council 22. R&SM; Commandery 36 Knights Templar; Scottish Rite; Aladdin Shrine, Columbus, and Marion Shrine Club.

After coming to Marion he was employed by the former Columbus. Delaware & Marion Electric company, interurban line, then retired from Ohio Edison Company in 1962. He had been employed by electric companies 41 years and at the time of retirement was the Ohio Edison Co. farm representative.

In 1917 after graduation from Eagle Grove High School in Iowa, he enlisted in the armed forces. He had continued his education by attending Ames College, Ames, Iowa. In 1934, he received his reserve officer's commission and assumed retired status in 1960. He was a past commander of Bird-McGinnis Post 162, American Legion, and past chef de gare of 40 et 8. In the army, he was on the National Affairs Commission. He was a local Civil Defense staff adviser.

A charter member of Boy Scouts at Eagle Grove, he had been president of Harding Area Executive Council. He was a past president of Lions Club.

Surviving are his widow, Ruth E. Martin Larsen whom he married Aug. 18. 1929, in Marion; a son, Cmdr. James L. Larsen of the Navy stationed at Virginia Beach, Va.; a daughter, Mrs. Robert (Mary) Rudd of Bowling Green; four grandchildren, and a sister, Mrs. Nels (Thora) Quam of Northfield, Minn.

Services will be Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. in Emanuel Lutheran Church. Rev. M. E. Hollensen will officiate. Burial will be in Marion Cemetery. Friends may call at Denzer Funeral Home tonight from 7 to 9 a.m. until 10 a.m. Tuesday, then at the church after 12:30 p.m. In respect to Col. Larsen, the Marion County Red Cross office will be closed Tuesday from 2 to 3:30 p.m.
