Evelyn Arlene Thompson, the daughter of Andrew and Bertha Mae (Sebby) Thompson, was born October 25, 1919, near Eagle Grove, Iowa. She graduated from Clarion High School at the age of 16 and then received a Bachelor of Arts degree from St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota. She taught high school English, history, and speech for 18 years.

On June 8, 1947, Evelyn was united in marriage to Myron Ross Esler of Grinnell. They farmed near Grinnell until 1959 when they moved to her father’s farm near Goldfield. In 1996 they moved to 210 S. Washington in Eagle Grove. In 2010 they moved to assisted living at Rotary Ann Home in Eagle Grove.

Evelyn was a member of Holmes Lutheran Church where she was confirmed and married. She taught Sunday School and was active in the Home Circle. She also belonged to Alpha Delta Kappa (honorary teacher’s sorority) and the Veteran’s of Foreign Wars Auxiliary.

She enjoyed quilting, needle work, reading, scrapbooking and making greeting cards.

Evelyn passed away on Saturday, August 3, 2019, at Rotary Senior Living in Eagle Grove, at the age of 99 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Myron Esler in 2010, daughter, LuAnn, parents, Andrew and Bertha Thompson, and her brother, Raymond Thompson.

Evelyn is survived by her son, John (Kim) Esler of Pocahontas, IA; three grandchildren: Kelley (Shelly Rule) Hamm of Lone Tree, CO, Aimee (Darrin) Simmons of Ormond Beach, FL and Gregory (Reanna) Villagomez of Nevada, MO; seven great-grandchildren: Ian Rule, Jazmine, Jaden, and Jordin Simmons, and Greyson, Ronan, and Graham Villagomez; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, August 7, 2019, at 10:30 a.m. at the Holmes Lutheran Church in Holmes with Pastor Richard Taylor officiating. Visitation will be Tuesday, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Foust Funeral Home in Eagle Grove. Burial will be in the Holmes Lutheran Cemetery in Holmes.

Memorials may be directed to: St. Olaf College, Alpha Delta Kappa Scholarship Fund, the Holmes Lutheran Cemetery Association or the Holmes Lutheran Missionary Fund.
