Eagle Grove Eagle --- Eagle Grove, Iowa

*****

On the winter's day of Jan. 8, 1880, more than 79 years ago, a son was born to Eric and Angeline Christian who was named Lawrence J. He grew to young manhood at his home in Alta. In 1903 he came to Eagle Grove, and was employed as a hotel clerk. Through all of his long lifetime he labored with great industry, at times undergoing some of the more strenuous sort of manual work. Until a light stroke just last fall limited his strength and abilities, he was to be seen always active and of unusual vigor at his age.

On another winter's day. Jan. 2, 1905, a courtship with Eva Griffeth culminated in a marriage that was to span more than 54 -1/2 years. Their family grew to include three sons and two daughters. Angeline, the youngest, became a victim of the great 1918 epidemic at the tender age of two. Edmund passed away in 1951. Eugene now resides
at Napierville, Ill., Lyndon at Westervllle, Ohio and Ve Lita (now Mrs. Russell Vohaska) at North Riverside, Ill.

From the age of 14, at which time he was immersed into Christ at the Church of Christ in Alta, to the end of his days on earth, he was a constant man of religious faith. Even after his first stroke in 1958 he rallied sufficiently enough in strength to return to the services of Park Church of Christ in Goldfield, where he was a member since 1949. His Interest in and hunger for the comforting and nourishing words of the Bible were many times gratified by his bedside during his final weeks with select and requested readings. He loved the assurances of the Grand Old Book, resting with peaceful thoughts as they were read.

On a pleasant summer's day July 14, 1959 he quietly passed on to the realm of the departed. His span of years had been long and full of good. His memory will linger in the hearts of hundreds who knew him. He will be especially missed by his wife, his children, his 7 grandchildren, his 7 great grandchildren, his brother Lucius of Turtle Lake, N D., his other brother Morris, of Eagle Grove, his sister Mrs. Mae Scott, of Detroit, Mich., with countless of his helpful neighbors and friends.

Funeral services were held Friday, July 17th at the Sacquety Chapel in charge of Rev. Dale V. Knowles, pastor of the Park Church of Christ, Goldfield. Casket bearers were Don E. Bennett, Alvin Anderson, Hale Plunkett, M. E. Siemens., Dallas Stapp and Carl Hebner. Burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery.

These attending the funeral from out of town were: Eugene Christian of Napierville, Ill.; Lyndon Christian of Westerville, Ohio; Mr. and Mrs. Russell Vohaska of North Riverside, Ill.; Patricia Speck of North Riverside, Ill.; Mrs. May Scott of Detroit, Mich.; Mr. and Mrs. Worley Davis, Mrs. Viola Howe and daughter Alene of Marathon; Cyril Anderson of Cedar Rapids; Mrs. James Dishon of Northwood; Mrs. Bill Ferch and son Jimmie of Northwood; Mrs. Ruth Perry of Mason City; and Mrs. Marlowe, Mrs. Gary Hall and Mrs. Robert Miller of Webster City.
