Samuel Fossler
22 February 1828 ---- 24 November 1907

Mrs. J. A. McDonald [McDonough] of Eagle Grove, sister of Mrs. Ed Booth, was at the Booth home, when her father Mr. S. Fossler died. She came with him from Eagle Grove for a visit here and the shock of his taking off by himself in the watches of the night was inexpressibly intense to all the children.

Death of Samuel Fossler

Our former old resident Samuel Fossler died at the home of his daughter Mrs. Jennie Booth at Humboldt last Saturday night Nov. 28 and the remains were brought to Livermore for burial last Tuesday. Mr. Fossler’s death was caused by apoplexy. He had a slight stroke while at Eagle Grove some months ago which was reported in those columns at the time. He retired to his bed as usual last Saturday night and was found dead in the morning. He was in the habit of occupying a cot near the stove. Mr. Booth built the fire in the stove in the morning with the old gentleman lying near it as usual and it was supposed for some time that he was merely asleep.

Deceased would have been 80 years of age the 22nd of February. He was born in Pennsylvania and moved to Illinois when a boy. He came to Hardin Co. Iowa about 40 years ago where he ran a grist mill for about 20 years. He came to Livermore in 1885 and for a number of years he conducted a furniture and undertaking store. He then went back to Hardin county for a few years but returned here to make his home. A few years ago his wife died at this place since which his place of residence has been somewhat unsettled.

Four daughters survive him being Mrs. Alice McDonough at Eagle Grove, Mrs. Jennie Booth at Humboldt, Mrs. Mary Miller at Perry and Mrs. Lydia Frank at Des Moines. Two boys and a girl died in infancy. The four daughters with other relatives were present at the funeral which occurred from the residence at Humboldt last Tuesday morning. Rev. Chapler, Methodist minister from Eagle Grove officiating and the remains were brought in the hearse for burial in Union cemetery at this place. —Livermore Gazette.
