Death Removes Former Troy Township Farmer After Short Illness. Citizen of County 33 Years.

J. Y. McCormick died at his home in this city Friday forenoon, Jan. 4th. He had been ill but a few days. Thursday evening he became unconscious and the children were notified that his condition was serious and that his chances for recovery were grave.

Mr. McCormick moved his family onto the McCormick farm homestead in Troy township, southeast of Eagle Grove in 1896 and resided there continuously until he retired from active work. At that time he turned the farm over to his boys and spent the remainder of his life, about ten years, enjoying the leisure his years of hard work, industry and thrift, had earned for him and his faithful wife. Mr. McCormick was a successful farmer, a good provider and an excellent neighbor. He was fair and square in his business dealings and has the respect of the entire community. The sympathy of all is extended the bereaved relatives.

Obituary

John Young McCormick, son of Alfred S. and Sara Jane McCormick was born in Spencer, Owen county, Indiana, April 18, 1851. He lived there until he was twenty years of age. His father died when he was only three years old. He went to Missouri where he lived for three years. He was married at Butler, Mo., to Laura Belle Murphey on February 17, 1873. After two years they moved to Buffalo, Sangamon county, Ill., where they lived for twenty-two years. In January of 1896, they moved near Eagle Grove, Iowa, and ten years ago they moved into town where they have since resided.

There are six children living: Alfred H. of Evanston, Ill., John L. of Kansas City, Mo., Grace M. Watkins of Thompson, Iowa, Elmer E. of Elmore, Minn., Fred R. and Eugene H. of Eagle Grove. Two have passed away, Sarah Belle and Harley, both died in childhood. There are nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He has one sister Josephine Demarcus of Spencer, Ind., and three half sisters. His sister, Mrs. Demarcus, was unable to attend the funeral because of sickness. Aside from those he leaves many other relatives and friends.

Mr. and Mrs. McCormick celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary and would have celebrated their 55th next February had he lived.

Mr. McCormick was always well liked by his friends and neighbors. He was himself a good friend and always fond of and interested in children.

He passed away Jan. 4, 1929, at the age of 77 years, eight months, and 26 days.

Funeral services were held in the Methodist church. The sermon was preached by Rev. W. G. Muhleman. Interment was made in Rose Hill cemetery.

McCormick, Kansas City, Mo., Albert Nelson and wife, Britt; Howard Watkins, Blue Earth, Minn., Elmer McCormick and wife and son, Elmore, Minn., Ed. Van Dyke and family, West Bend, Everyl Koestler, Thompson.
