Victor J. Halligan was born on February 3, 1913, in Fort Dodge, Iowa, to Jay and Margaret Halligan. As a young man, he moved with his parents to Letcher, S. D. He attended schools there. The family then moved back to the Fort Dodge area. On September 16, 1931, he married Annis Topliff and the couple established their home on a farm near Gilmore City, Iowa. He farmed for 56 years. His wife, Annis, died in 1987. He then married Dena LaRue in 1988, and the couple established their home in Humboldt, Iowa. Dena died in 1996. Later that same year, he married June Combs and the couple established their home in Eagle Grove, Iowa.

Victor J. Halligan, formerly of Gilmore City, Iowa, died Tuesday, December 12, 2000, at his home in Eagle Grove at the age of 87. He is survived by his wife, June, Eagle Grove; three daughters, Arlys Dodd, and husband, Dennis, Sheila Lavelle, and husband, Jim, and Vickie Kaufman, all of Gilmore City; one son, LeRoy Halligan, and wife, Bonnie, Gilmore City; 13 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and 3 great-great-grandchildren; three stepdaughters, Doris Badger, and husband, Ben, Esquindedo, Calif., Helen Renner, and husband, Bob, Mobile Bay, Ala., and Peggy Osborne, and husband, James, Edgewood, Maryland; three stepsons, Bud Breckenridge, Des Moines, Iowa, Walter Breckenridge, and wife, Georgene, Alverdo, Texas, and Doug Gambrill, and wife, Shelly, Eagle Grove; and 19 stepgrandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Sam and John; his first wife, Annis, in 1987; and his second wife, Dena, in 1996.

Funeral services were held on Friday, December 15, 2000, at 10:30 a.m., al St. John's Church in Gilmore City with the Reverend Eugene Ulses officiating at the Mass of Christian Burial. Burial was held in the Marble Valley Cemetery in Gilmore City. Sievers-Swank-Laufersweiler Funeral Home in Humboldt was in charge of arrangements.
