Herschel Seward Flumerfelt (1899-1980)

August 3, 1899 --- July 13, 1980

Herschel Flumerfelt was born on August 3, 1899, in Martin County, Ind., the son of James A. and India Gaither Flumerfelt [Flummerfelt]. He died at his farm home near Eagle Grove on Sunday, July 13, 1980, at the age of 80 years, 11 months and 10 days.

He grew up and attended school in Indiana. He moved to Iowa in 1919 and worked on various farms in the Eagle Grove area. On Dec. 27, 1927, he was united in marriage with Evelyn Lavina Sharp at Council Bluffs. After their marriage, they lived in Chicago for 11 years, where he worked as a fireman for the railroad. Later, the family moved to Iowa where they farmed and Herschel had lived on the present farm for the past 42 years. Mrs. Flumerfelt died in October, 1974. Herschel was a long-time member of the United Methodist Church and the Odd Fellows Lodge.

He is survived by his children: Dorothy and her husband, Donald Loper of Bellevue, Neb.; Donald and his wife, Donna Flumerfelt of rural Eagle Grove; his grandchildren: Mrs. Donna Lunzmann; Deeann Loper; Debra Loper; Denise Flumerfelt and Daniel Flumerfelt; a sister, Mrs. Mabel Flory of Bloomfield, Ind. and other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, and two brothers: Willie and J. Ross Flumerfelt [Flummerfelt].

Funeral services for Herschel Flumerfelt were held on Wednesday afternoon, July 16, 1980, at 1 p. m. at the United Methodist Church in Eagle Grove. Rev. Donald Forbes of Ames officiated and burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery at Eagle Grove. Visitation was held at the Kastler-Babcock Funeral Home on Tuesday.

Record Date: 12 Jan 1937 Record Place: Chicago, Illinois Occupation: Fireman Loco. Herschel is buried in Rose Hill Cemetery, Eagle Grove, Wright County, Iowa, Gravestone Inscription: Herschel S. Flumerfelt. Parents: James Andrew Flummerfelt and India Gaither Flummerfelt are buried in Fairview Cemetery, Elnora, Daviess County, Indiana. Herschel is the only family member to change the spelling of his surname from Flummerfelt to Flumerfelt. Two brothers are found buried in Indiana as Flummerfelt & one sister is also buried as (Flummerfelt) Flory, in Indiana.
