Marillyn L. (Etherington) Korth, 83, of Hampton and formerly of Dows, passed away Saturday, July 6, 2019 at Franklin General Hospital in Hampton. Funeral services for Marillyn Korth will be held on Thursday, July 11, 2019 at 11:00 AM at Morgan Bradford United Methodist Church, 569 100th Street in Dows with Reverend Judy Eilders and Reverend Erling Shultz officiating. A meal and time of fellowship will follow the funeral service at the Dows Community Center in Dows. Visitation for Marillyn Korth will be held on Wednesday, July 10, 2019 from 5:00 – 7:00 PM at Ewing Funeral Home, 100 North Lee Street in Dows.

Marillyn Louise Korth was born October 1, 1935 at the Mahaska County Hospital in Oskaloosa, Iowa. She was the only child of John and Leo (Taylor) Etherington. Marillyn’s early years were spent on a farm near Sully, Iowa. In 1940, her parents bought a farm near Vincent, Iowa and moved there. She attended country school at Newark # 6 and Eagle Grove High School, graduating in 1953. She then attended Eagle Grove Junior College graduating in 1955 with an Associate Degree in Elementary Education. She taught first grade at Dows Community Schools, a job she loved.

On August 3, 1958 she was married to Delvern Korth, of Dows, at the Vincent Methodist Church. The moved to their farm home in Dows and lived their entire married life there. They were blessed with two children, Marilianne and Jonathan.

Marillyn was a farm wife and a professional volunteer. She was a member of the Morgan United Methodist Church and the church organist for over 50 years. She played for many funerals and weddings. She organized the children’s choir for a number of years. She was also the church lay leader. Her church family was very important to her. She also had a connection with the Faith Baptist Church in Hampton, Iowa.

She served on the Dows Community school board for 6 years. She entertained at several nursing homes and loved visiting with friends and neighbors there. She sang with several groups and individuals.

For several years, she worked the flower shop in Dows. Ribbons and corsages were her specialty. Marillyn was an early member of the Iowa River Players in Rowan, Iowa. She played in many roles and especially loved the character parts. She loved to act and make people laugh and didn’t mind if they laughed at her. She also wrote a weekly article, “From the Korner”, for the Dows Advocate, a part of the Wright County Monitor.

Survivors include her children, Marilianne, “Till” and Tosha Brooks, of Independence, Missouri and Jonathan and Elizabeth Korth of Dows, Iowa. Her beloved grandchildren, Clay Askland (Amber) of Des Moines, Jade (CJ) Bender of Dows, Alex Korth of Altoona, Cassandra (Michael) Weide of Dows, Haylee Korth (Joe Skow) of Indianola, Michael Korth of Dows. Six precious great-grandchildren, Justin Bender of Dows, Emmett Bender of Dows, Lilyanne Weide of Dows, Dallas Askland of Des Moines, Elias Weide of Dows, Roxelle Weide of Dows. A special adopted daughter, Chardel Carlson and her son Joshua Leonard of Des Moines. Her best friend Norma Tripp of Coulter. Two step grandchildren Jennifer (Cory) Williams and Jason Brooks. Three step great-grandchildren Macy Brooks, Aslan Wilde and Bryce Williams. Marillyn had many young friends who called her grandma. Six nieces and nephews, including her namesake Leslie Marlyn Meyer who also survive. She was preceded in death by her parents John and Leo, her husband Delvern, his parents Earl and Harriet Korth, sisters and brothers-in-law, Elmer and Loretta Paulsen, Alvin and Charlotte Meyer, two nephews, Delbert Paulsen and David Beyer.
