Mrs. Ray Garrett, 65, died at her home Monday morning following a long illness.

Funeral services were Wednesday afternoon at the United Methodist Church with burial in Rose Hill Cemetery. The pastor Rev. Donald Forbes was in charge.

Mrs. Garrett is survived by her husband, one son, Don of Eagle Grove, and one daughter, Mrs. Lynne Averett of Omaha, Neb.; five grandchildren, and two brothers, John A. Maddy, Des Moines and Delno Maddy, Monroe.

Mr. and Mrs. Garrett moved here in 1948. She was a member of the United Methodist Church, Equality Club, Order of Eastern Star.

Several years ago, Mrs. Garrett lost her eye sight and attended the Iowa Commission for the Blind School in Des Moines to equip herself to lead an active life. She continued her homemaking and student interests and was a familiar figure in the business district doing her shopping with the aid of a white cane.

Mrs. Garrett gave many lectures in the community concerning the training she received and was active in sight conservation work with the Lions Club.

Hollace Maddy was born near Knoxville, graduated from Knoxville High School and Simpson College, Indianola in 1930. A speech major, she taught two years in Marion County, then at the elementary school in Pleasantville, and coached girls basketball at Pleasantville.

She married Ray Garrett in 1933 in her parents' home near Knoxville. They farmed near Adel for three years, and later lived in various communities for 12 years. Mr. and Mrs. Garrett then lived two years in Fort Dodge before coming to Eagle Grove in 1948.

Obituary

Hollace Coleen Maddy was born April 3, 1908, near Knoxville, Ia., the daughter of Frank E. and Mary Kutz Maddy.

She graduated from Knoxville High School, and Simpson College, Indianola, Ia., with a major in Speech.

She taught school for two years in Marion County, Ia., and elementary school at Pleasantville, Ia. She also coached the girls basketball team at Pleasantville.

She was united in marriage to Ray Garrett of Adel at her parent's home near Knoxville on May 28, 1933. The couple made their home on a farm near Adel for three years.

Ray was employed by the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture for a period of 12 years, and the family lived in various central Iowa towns. They lived in Fort Dodge for two years before moving to Eagle Grove in January of 1948.

Mrs. Garrett died at her home on Monday, March 4, at the age of 65 years, 11 months and one day.

She is survived by her husband; one son, Don Garrett; and one daughter, Mrs. Lynne Averett, Omaha, Nebr.; two brothers, John K. Maddy, Des Moines, and Delno W. Maddy, Monroe; and five grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two stillborn daughters; and one brother, Leo Wayne Maddy.

Mrs. Garrett was a member of the United Methodist Church, Church Circle, Equality Club, Sunday School teacher, and Order of the Eastern Star. She was very active in Sight Conservation work and other Lion's Club Projects.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, March 6, at the United Methodist Church. Rev. Donald Forbes officiated at the 3 p.m. service and burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery.
