March 9, 1876 --- May 31, 1944

S. M. Reider, 68, died at his home 207 N. Commercial late Wednesday afternoon. The cause was diagnosed as heat exhaustion and cardiac condition.

Mr. Reider had been working around the yard of his home most of the afternoon and it is supposed that becoming hot he had gone to the basement to cool off. His body was discovered in the basement about 5:30 by Mrs. Reider, who had missed seeing him in the yard and gone to look for him.

Mr. Reider was born March 9, 1876. He entered the employ of the C. & N. W. on November 1, 1897 and had remained with the road ever since. He was promoted to Engineer on March 9, 1902 being No. 2 on the seniority list at the time of his death. He brought the passenger in as usual Tuesday night.

Surviving are his wife and three children, Dr. Allen Reider of Milwaukee, Wis., John of Eagle Grove, and Mrs. Edwin Lonning, Jr. who had been making her home with her parents since her husband entered the service.

The funeral is set tentatively for 9 o'clock Saturday morning in the Catholic Church.

Obituary

Funeral services for S. M. Reider, whose sudden death last Wednesday afternoon, May 31, was reported last week, were held Saturday morning at nine o’clock at Sacred Heart church. Very Rev. J. L. Byrne, pastor of Sacred Heart church, and Rev. Jas. Mahoney of Nevada, a friend of the Reider family officiated. Burial was made in Calvary cemetery.

Stephen M. Reider was born on March 9, 1876, at Cedar Valley, near Waterloo, Iowa. When he was twenty-one years of age he entered the service of the Chicago and North Western railroad, and in March, 1902, he was promoted to engineer. Mr. Reider had been passenger engineer for some years and the day before his death brought the evening passenger in from Hawarden.

He was united in marriage to Marie E. Siesseger on February 19, 1901, who survives. He is also survived by two sons and one daughter, Dr. G. Allan Reider of Milwaukee, Wis.; John R. Reider of Eagle Grove; Mrs. Edwin Lonning Jr., who has been at home with her parents while her husband is serving in the South Pacific area, and four grandchildren, David, Anne, Marie and Michael Reider of Milwaukee, and Susanne Reider of this city.

Those from out of town who attended the funeral were Dr. and Mrs. G. Allan Reider, Milwaukee, Wis.; Rev. Jas. Mahoney, Nevada; Mrs. Henry Murry and Miss Bea Murry and Mr. and Mrs Harry Barnes, all of Blue Earth Minn.; Mrs. Joe Engesser, Bancroft; Mr. and Mrs. Frank Siesseger, Jean Siesseger Cranney and J. H. Siesseger, all of Clear Lake; Mrs. Fred Siesseger and J. J. Burnett of Mason City; Mr. and Mrs. George Thul, St. Joe; Mr. and Mrs. Viggo Christensen, Bancroft; M. E. Polhemus and Henry Meier, Burt; and Miss Nina Hanson, Goldfield.
