Richard E. Michener, 72, of Eagle Grove, died Tuesday, July 27, 2004, at USA Healthcare in Clarion.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, July 30, 2004, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Eagle Grove with Father David Beckman officiating.

Richard E. Michener was born January 4, 1932 in Oelwein, Fayette County, Iowa, the son of Virgil E. and Marjorie (Bennett) Michener. He was raised and educated in the area of his birth, graduating from Sacred Heart Catholic School in 1950. Richard then served in the U. S. Navy from October 1951 to September 1955. He then began working for the Chicago Great Western Railroad as a clerk. On June 27, 1959, he married Blanche Carpenter at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Oelwein. They made their homes in Charles City, Osage, New Hampton, Oelwein, and moved to Eagle Grove in 1980. Richard retired from the railroad in 1992. He was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Eagle Grove and Oelwein. He enjoyed the outdoors—playing golf and fishing. Richard also had a great love for his "four-legged friend"—Fritz.

He is survived by his wife, Blanche, of Eagle Grove; a son, Brian Michener, of Eagle Grove, a sister, Colleen Patten, and her husband, Guy, of Midland, Mich., brothers, Tom Michener and his wife, Donna, of Bella Vista, Ark.; and Steve Michener, and his wife, Diana, of Cedar Rapids, and several nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Cathy, and a son, Michael Scott, in 1962.

Foust Funeral Home in Eagle Grove was in charge of the arrangements.
