James Herschel Spangler was born July 25, 1916, the son of Homer and Julia Larson Spangler, at Eagle Grove. He received his education in the Eagle Grove school system and graduated from the Eagle Grove High School in 1934.

He was united in marriage to Phyllis Fisher of Eagle Grove on May 28, 1939, at the East-Side Lutheran Church in Eagle Grove. The couple farmed south of Eagle Grove until their retirement in 1985.

He was a member of the Farm Bureau, A.S.C.S., Security Savings Bank board of directors, the Woolstock Elevator board of directors, Share Christmas, and the Eagle Grove Chamber of Commerce.

James Herschel Spangler died at his son's farm of electrocution on May 11, 1993 at the age of 76 years, nine months and 16 days.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Emory; and sister, Bernice Buckingham.

He is survived by his wife; three sons, Dean of Rocky Mount, N.C., Loren of Mesa, Ariz., and Brian of Eagle Grove; one daughter, Mrs. Bob (Joanne) Brisbin of Princeton, W.V.; one brother, Kenneth of Eagle Grove; 10 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Friday, May 14 at the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Eagle Grove. The Rev. Lyle Peters officiated at the 1:30 p.m. service and burial was in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Eagle Grove.
