MARGARET ALVIDA NELSON
Margaret Alvida Wahlstrom was born on April 13, 1913, the daughter of Arthur and Mabel Carruthers Wahlstrom at Brandon, S. D. She attended school at Colton, S. D. and graduated in 1932. She was employed as a housekeeper and worked in a Sioux Falls department store. Margaret as united in marriage to Harlan E. Nelson of Sioux Falls, S. D. on May 29, 1937, at Sioux Falls. The couple remained in Sioux Falls for a time before moving to Webster City. They moved to Eagle Grove in 1943. They operated the Consumer Grocery and later the Club Cafe. Mr. Nelson died in 1977.

Mrs. Nelson was a long-time member of the United Methodist Church, and past president of the United Methodist Women. She was one of the first den mothers in Eagle Grove, having been a Cub Scout and a Brownie leader. She was chairman of Scandinavian Dager, and parade marshal in 1980. She was also past-president of the Equality Club, and taught painting in adult education classes at Iowa Central Community College, including rosemaling, rag, sponge, and water color landscaping. She was a member of the Iowa Artists.

Margaret Nelson died at the Clarion Community Memorial Hospital in Clarion on January 17, 1989. She had suffered a stroke in April of last year. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and one brother, Wesley Wahlstrom. She is survived by one son, Richard, Osseo, Minn.; one daughter, Mrs. Kenneth (Mary Ellen) Thorson, Chicago, Ill.; two sisters, Mrs Bob (Elva) McCaffrey, Grand Island, Neb.; and Peggy Ann Berg, Bremerton, Wash.; five grandchildren; Detra and Darcy Nelson; and Randy, Mike and Eric Thorson.

Funeral services were held on January 19 at 2 p.m. at the United Methodist Church. The Rev. Scott C. Hall officiated and burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery, Eagle Grove.
