Ellen Sophia Fisher Whiting, 93, passed away at her home June 6 in Johnson.

Born July 31, 1896, in Eagle Grove, Iowa, she was the daughter of Henry and Anna (Bergman) Fisher. She married Zach Whiting in Eagle Grove, Iowa, Feb. 18, 1920, and she was predeceased by her husband Aug. 3, 1976. A longtime resident of Johnson, she attended the United Church of Johnson, was a member of the Home Demonstration Group, a member and past president of the Plot Cemetery Association, and she taught piano lessons to area youth. She was a loving mother and grandmother, a special homemaker with great skill in making rugs, quilts and other handiwork. She was known by all for her baking skills.

She is survived by five daughters, Mrs. Wilbur (Marion) Locke of Waterville, Lois Tatro of Quechee, Mrs. Douglas (Mildred) Sargent of Johnson, Mrs. Kenneth (Helen) Neil of Johnson, and Miss Alice G. Whiting of Johnson; three sisters-in-law, Mrs. Kenneth (Mildred) Adams of Mankato, Minn., Miss Alice M. Whiting of Waterville, and Mrs. Roland (Ruby) Whiting of Angelica, N.Y.; 12 grandchildren, Stephen Locke, Kathi Locke, Larry Tatro, Jerry Tatro, Kerri-Ann Brockway, Cheryl Huckins, Susan Sargent-Fike, Jennifer Sargent, Laurie Sargent, David Neil, Shawn Neil and Kevin Neil; 16 great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Mrs. Whiting was predeceased by a son, Arthur Wayne Whiting, April 20, 1972.

Family will receive friends Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Holcomb-des Groseilliers Funeral Home, Main Street, Johnson. Funeral services will be Saturday at 2 p.m. the United Church of Johnson. Interment will be in the Lamoille View Cemetery in Johnson. Contributions may be made to the Lamoille County Home Health in Morrisville, or to the United Church of Johnson, Johnson. Arrangements are under the direction of John des Groseilliers, Holcomb-des Groseilliers Funeral Home, Johnson.
