ROBERT E. FOTHERGILL, 86, of Cokesbury Village, Hockessin, Delaware died there Friday. Mr. Fothergill retired as a patent liaison chemist at the Du Pont Co. Experimental Station in 1967, after 37 years. He began at Du Pont as a chemist at the central research department. After retirement, he was a consultant at the University of Delaware College of Marine Studies from 1968 to 1979. He received a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering from Iowa State University, Iowa City, in 1924, and a doctorate in organic chemistry in 1929. He was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, where he was had been treasurer of the church school and an elder.

He is survived by his wife, Grace M.; a daughter, Marjorie Mabrey of Arden; a brother, Harold L. of Arcadia, Calif.; a sister, Dorothy Harper of Diamond Bar, Calif.; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday in Cokesbury Village Auditorium. Burial will be private. Instead of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Westminster Presbyterian Church, Wilmington.
