November 16, 1835 --- October 18, 1918

Hannah Wood was born in Stuben [Steuben] county, N. Y., on November 16, 1835, and departed this life on October 18, 1918. Thus on her approaching birthday she would have been 83 years of age.

Some time near the year 1856 the deceased was united in marriage to a Mr. Wilcox and moved with him to Baraboo, Soc [Sauk], county, Wis. In a few days her husband started on a return trip to New York for business reasons, expecting to return soon, but was killed in a railroad accident. Thus the bride of a few weeks was left a widow and in a few months a mother in a strange new country. But good fortune did not fail her. For here she made friends and proved her worth as is disclosed by the fact that she married again on November 21, 1858, to Mr. Harrison DeLawyer. Mr. and Mrs. DeLawyer came to Iowa in 1861, where they have made their home for the most part since, the last thirty-three years being spent in Eagle Grove.

Mrs. DeLawyer was the mother of nine children, three of whom an infant, Mrs. Sarah Forsythe and Franklin Delbert are deceased. Besides the husband, now past 86 years, the surviving relatives are: her daughter, Mrs. Mary Schroeder, five sons, James Clinton Wilcox of Ames, Gilford Harrison of Ackley, George Albert of Union; Duane Henry of Grettinger [Graettinger] and Charles Edward of Omaha, Neb. There are also 28 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. These mourn the loss of one who gave largely of her strength for the good of those who were dear to her. Her place can never be filled in their hearts by another. It is said of her that she always responded to the call of the needy and the suffering when she was in her more active period of life. Those who know her best say that she was a good woman. A wide circle of friends and acquaintances will mess her. Funeral services were conducted on Monday afternoon by Rev. Hugh F. Moore from the residence of her daughter, Mrs. Schroeder.
