March 18, 1811 --- December 17, 1913

The funeral of the late Thomas Duffy—the well known Williams and Hamilton county pioneer, who died at his home in this city on December 17, 1913, at the remarkable age of 102 years and nine months—was held from St. Mary's Roman Catholic church at ten o'clock Saturday forenoon and was very largely attended by the bereaved relatives and pioneer friends and neighbors. Rev. J. J. O'Meara celebrated the requiem mass and preached a consoling sermon, in which he paid a just and eloquent tribute to the deceased and to the pioneers, whose industry and frugality and undaunted courage has converted this once bleak and barren section into a veritable Garden of Eden.

The funeral cortege was one verbal tributes to the memory of this widely known pioneer and venerable citizen. Peace to his ashes,

Surviving are the aged wife and twelve children—eight sons and four daughters—namely: James K. of Waterloo, Thomas and Jos. C. of Oldham, S. D., Patrick E. and Mrs. James Coine of Boone, Mrs. Alice E. McDonald of Chicago, and Mrs. Mary Olson, Mrs. Kathryn O'Malley, Charles A., William C, Peter L. and John M. all of Williams.

The following relatives from a distance were present at the funeral. Matthew Duffy of Chicago; Edward Duffy of Summer, Owen Duffy of Masonville, and Hugh, Frank, Joseph, Thomas, Michael and Geo. Duffy of Fairbanks; Peter V. Olson of Oldham, S. D.; Matthew Olson, Manson, Mrs. Jas. K. Duffy and children of Waterloo; Mrs. P. E. Duffy of Boone, Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Winters of Dubuque, James Coine of Boone, James and Carrie McDonald of Duncombe; Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Harris and Mr. and Mrs. H. Harris and daughter of Alden.

Last week Wednesday afternoon at his home in Williams occurred the death of Thomas Duffy—probably the oldest man in this part of Iowa. He was 102 years of age, having been born in Ireland in 1811.

In 1827 Mr. Duffy came to America with his parents, settling first in New York and later moving to Blackhawk county, Iowa. Mr. Duffy came to Hamilton county in 1855, settling on a farm near Williams. He is survived by twelve children. His death was caused by infirmities incident to old age.
