Esther May Madson was born November 25, 1911, at Algona, the daughter of Carl and Olena Fredrickson Madson. She was educated in a rural school in Kossuth County.

Esther was united in marriage to Robert Derscheid of Eagle Grove on February 29, 1936, at Clarion. They farmed southwest of Eagle Grove for two years before moving to Forest View farm, which is the family farm just west of the Boone River and the Eagle Grove Country Club.

They moved to Eagle Grove in 1968, and were living in town at the time of his death in 1987.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church, Circle, Rebekah Lodge, Royal Neighbors, Eagle Grove Senior Citizens, and the Boone Valley Sewing Club.

Esther had been in failing health for some time and had resided at the Marian Home in Fort Dodge since August of 1989.

Esther Derscheid died at the Trinity Regional Hospital in Fort Dodge on February 24, 1990, at the age of 78 years, two months, and 29 days.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and a sister, Martha Wilkinson.

She is survived by her two sons, Ronald, Eagle Grove; Bruce, Minneapolis, Minn.; two daughters, Phyllis Melchert, Marion; and Susan, Eagle Grove; two brothers, Albert and John Madson, Mason City; two sisters, Erna Hain, Mason City; and Katheryn Shillington, Clarion; four grandchildren, Linda Melchert; Mrs. Chris (Kristin) Kula, Marion; Mrs. William (Deborah) Gade, Cedar Rapids; David Derscheid, Eagle Grove; three great-grandchildren, Andrea and Michael Kula, Marion; and William Gade Jr., Cedar Rapids.

Funeral services were held at the United Methodist Church on Tuesday, February 27 in Eagle Grove, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Scott C. Hall officiating. Burial was in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Eagle Grove.

Kastler-Babcock Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
