September 2, 1888 ---- October 16, 1918

William Teufel, the son of F. C. and Harriet Teufel, was born in Woolstock, Iowa, on September 2, 1888, and departed this life in Neb., on October 16, 1918, being 30 years of age.

Practically all the life of the deceased has been spent in Eagle Grove and vicinity. Here he met and married Ethel King, who survives him, mourning the loss of one who was in every way a husband after her most cherished ideal. The other surviving relatives are: one brother, Fred of Pueblo, Colo., and three sisters, Mrs. W. W. McCarty of Eagle Grove, Mrs. Frank Partridge of Woolstock, and Mrs. Frank Wells of this place.

Mr. Teufel left for Omaha on July 29, having volunteered for service for his country. He passed all his examinations with fine grades and was assigned as machine gunner with the 60th Balloon Company. Like so many who have been taken in recent days the deceased was sick but a few days when death came. He received every care that science and skill could give and was fortunate in having the presence of his wife and other relatives during the last hours. It is a matter of wonderful comfort to his relatives that during his last sickness and while fully conscious, in talking with the chaplain.

Mr. Teufel gave his heart to the Lord and promised, if restored, to live a Christian life. The departure of this fine young man came as a great shock to the entire community where he was known and respected by all. Expressions of sympathy for the mourning relatives were heard on every hand. But for the quarantine a large company would have gathered for the funeral services which were held on Saturday afternoon from the home of his sister, Mrs. Wells. Interment was made in Rose Hill cemetery. A grateful country will recognize that this man who offered his services to his country, but who was not able to do all that he had hoped did in reality give his life for his country. His is the first star to be turned to gold on the service flag of the Baptist church.

Mrs. Ethel Teufel, Mrs. Frank Wells, Mrs. W. W. McCarty, Mrs. Frank Partridge
