Bessie Quigley Dies Oct. 30th, at age 58

GOODELL—Local friends received a sad message Sunday that Bessie Quigley, age 58 of Ft. Dodge had died early Sunday morning, Oct. 30, at Mercy hospital in Ft. Dodge, following several months illness suffering with cancer of the bones.

Bessie, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Pat Quigley, was born on a farm near Burr Oak, Winneshiek county, Jan. 9, 1897, and when a very young child came to Belmond with her parents, brothers and sisters. They lived on farms in that vicinity, and on farms in the Goodell vicinity.

Bessie attended the Goodell school and was graduated from the Belmond high school. About 40 years ago Mr. and Mrs. Quigley and children moved to a farm near Belmond. Mr. and Mrs. Quigley passed away while living there.

Bessie taught in rural schools and in the Belmond school for several years. She then took a business course and for the past twenty-five years has been employed as secretary to the Chamber of Commerce at Ft. Dodge, being forced to discontinue her work June 1 when she became ill.

She made her home at Ft. Dodge with her younger sister, Grace, who together owned their own house. Their brothers, Jim and Pat who lived south of Belmond retired from farming two years ago, and made their home with their sisters.

Bessie became ill with a pain in her hip last May, and was a patient in the hospital at Ft. Dodge for a few weeks, then was taken to Rochester where she was a patient at St. Mary’s hospital for two weeks, but doctors advised her to go to her home, nothing could be done for her. Since then her family has cared for her at home until Friday she became seriously ill and was taken to Mercy hospital at Ft. Dodge.

Surviving to mourn the loss of a sister are three sisters, Mrs. Joe (Esther) Fulton, and Grace Quigley of Ft. Dodge; Mrs. John Nelson (Nellie) of Minneapolis, Minn. three brothers Frank Quigley of Belmond; Pat and Jim Quigley of Ft. Dodge, besides a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services took place at the Sacred Heart Catholic church in Ft. Dodge Wednesday at 10 o’clock a.m. with burial in the family lot at St. Francis Catholic cemetery, Belmond.

GOODELL—Funeral services for Bessie Quigley, 58, Fort Dodge, will be held Wednesday at 10 a.m. at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Fort Dodge. Burial will be in the St. Francis Catholic Cemetery at Belmond.

Bessie, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Pat Quigley, was born on a farm near Burr Oak in Winneshiek County, Jan. 9, 1897. When small child the family moved to Belmond, later to Texas and then came to live on various farms in the Goodell vicinity. She was graduated from the Belmond High School and for several years taught in the Belmond school.

For 25 years she has been secretary to the Chamber of Commerce at Fort Dodge. June 1 she was forced to give up her work due to illness. Friday she entered the Fort Dodge hospital and died early Sunday of cancer of the bone.

Survivors include her brothers, Pat, Jim and Frank and her sisters, Grace and Mrs. Joe (Esther) Fulton, Fort Dodge, and Mrs. John (Nellie) Nelson, Minneapolis.
